The Bohart Museum of Entomology is inviting people to come in to "Meet the Beetles,” during the museum’s second weekend opening of 2011.

“Meet the Beetles” is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. Admission is free.

The museum, in 1124 Academic Surge, is home to more than 7 million specimens, plus a live “petting zoo” that includes Madagascar hissing cockroaches and walking sticks.

The museum schedules weekend events several times a year to accommodate families and others who are unable to visit during regular hours: 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Other weekend events through June 5:

  • “The Ants Go Marching On” — 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 13
  • Picnic Day — all day, Saturday, April 16
  • “Moth-ers Day” — 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 7
  • “June Bugs” — 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 5

Boredom Busters: February and April

Davis public schools are taking off Feb. 21 to 25 (the week of the Presidents Day holiday), and Campus Recreation is stepping in with a healthy, fun, safe alternative: Boredom Busters, for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Campus Rec, which also runs Boredom Busters during spring break (April 4-8 this year), added the Feb. 21-25 program in response to the Davis Joint Unified School District's decision to close the schools not only for Presidents Day (Monday, Feb. 21), but for the next four days as well, as "workday reduction" days.

Parents have the option of full-day Boredom Busters (8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) or half-day (8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.).

“Children will familiarize themselves with the UC Davis campus and discover all the interactive opportunities Campus Recreation has to offer, including arts and crafts, rock wall climbing, sports, and many other exciting, creative activities,” Campus Rec officials said.

The costs are the same in February and April: Full day — $210, or $195 for Activities and Recreation Center members. Half day — $145, or $135 for ARC members.

Registration and more information. Or call Campus Recreation, (530) 752-1730.
