President emeritus Clark Kerr to visit

Former University of California President Clark Kerr will speak on the university's past achievements and future challenges Tuesday in an afternoon presentation at the University Club.

Kerr, now 90, served as president between 1958 and 1967 - one of the most dynamic periods in UC history.

During his tenure, UC developed plans for three new campuses - Irvine, Santa Cruz and San Diego - and UC Berkeley received top ratings for its graduate programs. Kerr also played an important role in the writing of the Master Plan for Higher Education in California and led the reorganization of the UC system under the plan.

Kerr came to UC Berkeley in 1945 as a professor of industrial relations and later served as chancellor of the campus.

Since retiring from the presidency, Kerr has been a frequent national and international consultant on higher education and industrial economic issues.

He recently published Gold and Blue, an account of the evolution of the University of California under his leadership. The book is excerpted in today's issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education.

A Conversation with Clark Kerr" is set for 4:10-5 p.m. at the Club Room at the University.
