Police Seek Suspect in Second Sexual Assault

The city of Davis and UC Davis police departments are searching for a male suspect in the early Tuesday morning kidnapping and sexual assault of a female UC Davis student.

Police say the woman awoke in her downtown Davis residence around 2:45 a.m. to find a man with a knife on top of her. At knife point, he took her first to the Davis Central Park, where the assault began. He then moved her to the UC Davis campus near the football field and then assaulted her on an exterior balcony of the Social Sciences and Humanities Building.

The woman was examined at the UC Davis Medical Center Tuesday morning and was provided support and crisis counseling.

The suspect is described as a white male about 30 years old, 6 feet tall, with a medium build, olive complexion, straight medium-brown hair, bad teeth and a few days' growth of beard and mustache. He was wearing blue jeans, a black-and-red flannel or wool shirt and a dark blue or black baseball-style cap with mesh in the back.

Campus police are investigating whether this incident is connected to the sexual assault and attempted rape of another female student at the Social Sciences and Humanities Building Tuesday, Nov. 19.

"We are very concerned about the victim and about the safety of our students, faculty and staff," UC Davis Police Chief Calvin Handy said at a news briefing this morning at the Social Sciences and Humanities Building. "We are increasing our patrols, particularly in this area and in the housing areas on campus. We'd also like to remind people to be aware and alert and to ensure that doors and windows are locked."

Handy said he has also asked the city police to expand patrol of the area in and around Central Park in Davis.

A Campus Crime Alert Bulletin was issued earlier today to campus students, faculty and staff.

The campus escort service -- available to students, faculty and staff -- will be expanded, with rides beginning in the first hours of darkness. The service's number is (530) 752-1727.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the city of Davis Police Department at (530) 747-5430 or the UC Davis Police Department at (530) 752-9944.

More information about campus safety can be found on the safety and security page for the Aggie Family Pack.
