PICNIC DAY DISCOVERY...

UC Davis firefighter Aaron Buehring shows off tools of the trade for young recruit Luke Robert as the firehouse puts on an open house — one of the many activities of Picnic Day. The 90th annual student run event drew some 50,000 people to campus Saturday. The day offered more than 150 activities -- including packed chemistry magic shows; a student film festival in Hunt Hall; entomology museum tours; animal exhibits; the popular Doxie Derby, complete with giant screen TV replays at Rec Hall; a parade featuring almost 80 floats; and the Battle of the Bands (above), which found the Aggie Band-Uh! playing until 2 a.m. to earn top spot against fellow marching bands from Stanford, Berkeley, Humboldt State and elsewhere. At right, Kathy Pierce from the Northern California Herpetological Society has an Argus Monitor show its trick of standing on its back legs.
