The Summer Olympics are over, but the Olympics spirit is going strong in an exhibition at Shields Library.

The exhibition, titled UC Davis and the Olympics, is scheduled to run through Sept. 14 in the Shields lobby.

Prepared by the Special Collections Department, the exhibition comprises elements of the university's Colby E. "Babe" Slater Collection, plus information on alumni and faculty with Olympics connections.

Slater (1896-1965) was the first alumnus to win an Olympic gold medal.

He graduated from what was then the University Farm School in 1917 and went on to play rugby with the U.S. national team that won Olympic goal in 1920 and '24.

Slater subsequently settled in Clarksburg, in southern Yolo County, where he farmed for many years.

The exhibition also highlights:

-- Catherine Carr West '77, a gold medal swimmer in the 1972 Games.

-- Peter Snell '77, a gold medal runner in the 1960 and '64 Games.

-- Linda Somers '83, a marathoner in the 1996 Games.

-- Women's track and field coach Deanne Vochatzer, the head coach of the U.S. women's track and field team at the 1996 Games.

-- The husband-and-wife veterinary team of Jack Snyder and Sharon Spier, who coordinated the equine veterinary facility for the 2008 Games.

35 Years at the C.N. Gorman Museum: Selections from the Permanent Collections, a celebration of the museum's 35-year history as a showplace for the works of contemporary Native American and other indigenous artists. First floor, Hart Hall, through Sept. 5.
