UC Davis' Empyrean Ensemble is scheduled to present Night Music, a concert celebrating Professor Andrew Frank's 35-year tenure with the music department. The concert is set for 8 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The program calls for the ensemble to premiere two Frank compositions: Matinee d'ivresse for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion and piano; and Au bout de la nuit, a nocturne for flute, vibraphone and marimba. Also set for premiere is student Andy Tan's Madiola for viola and piano. The program also includes works by two of Frank's teachers: Jacob Druckman, Valentine for solo double bass; and George Crumb, Night of the Four Moons for alto, alto flute-piccolo, electric cello, banjo and percussion. The ensemble also plans to perform Arlene Zallman's Variations (on a Theme by Luca Marenzio) for solo piano. A preconcert talk, "Demystifying the Music," is set for 7 p.m.
