Men of steel: Construction of arts center is a show in itself

Workers from SMC Steel spend a clear winter day erecting steel beams at the new campus Center for the Arts. Work on the three-month steel project will wrap up next month, said Jim Fong, construction administrator for Architects and Engineers.

While the steelwork is being done, workers are also laying underground utilities and installing metal decks that will become the foundation of floors in the center. In all, about 60 to 70 workers are working daily on some aspect of the $53.5 million construction project, Fong said. It's expected to be completed in August 2002.
