Letter to the Editor: Blood Drive

Dear Campus Community:

In the wake of the devastating hurricanes and floods of the Gulf Coast, blood supplies have been badly disrupted and many destroyed.

For example, New Orleans not only lost all its blood supplies in the flood, but the city no longer has a resident population from which to request blood. A safe and secure blood supply is much needed to protect the many federal, state, local and volunteer emergency workers now in the area.

BloodSource has pledged to The Blood Center of New Orleans that it will attempt to provide all needed platelets for a full year, which will start as soon as New Orleans advises BloodSource that they are ready. In order to be prepared to meet this pledge, BloodSource must replenish its local supply of blood.

To help BloodSource Sacramento meet its pledge, UC Davis will host a campus-wide New Orleans/Gulf Coast blood drive.

This blood drive will also provide our local hospitals and medical centers with much-needed blood.

BloodSource is the source of blood and blood components to over 40 area hospitals in Northern and Central California, including the UC Davis Medical Center, Sutter Davis Hospital and Sutter General Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children of Northern California, and all the regional Kaiser Hospitals, among others.

Please join the rest of the campus on Nov. 7, 8, and 9 to donate blood for our first partnership in this important effort.

  • Freeborn Hall, Monday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 8, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

As the year goes on, we will keep you informed of each local blood drive to help BloodSource reach its goal of not only meeting our local needs, but supporting the critical medical needs of the people of New Orleans as they attempt to rebuild their city.

Sincerely,

— Larry Vanderhoef,

Chancellor
