The campus community is invited to attend an Oct. 8 colloquium celebrating the contributions of Walter Jennings, professor emeritus of food science and technology, and a pioneering researcher in gas chromatography.

Organizers said the event, titled Dr. Walter Jennings: An Honorary Colloquium, will start at 9 a.m. in the AGR Room at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

Jennings is due to give the keynote presentation at 9:40 a.m.The presentations are due to conclude at about 12:30 p.m., after which a hosted lunch is planned on the Moss Patio at the Buehler. After lunch, the event moves to the Robert Mondavi institute for Wine and Food Science for tours.

Before retiring in 1988, he served 35 years on the faculty of the Department of Food Science and Technology. He taught gas chromatography, an analytical chemistry technique, to an estimated 30,000 students from 25 countries.

In 1975, Jennings and a doctoral student founded J&W Scientific, which grew to become the largest manufacturer of fused silica columns for gas chromatography. Agilent Technologies purchased the company in 2000.
