Janet Gong has been named interim vice chancellor for Student Affairs. Her appointment began Jan. 1.
Gong, who had served as associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs, succeeds Judy Sakaki. On Jan. 1, Sakaki joined the Office of the President as vice president for Student Affairs. UC Davis began a national search for the vice chancellor position at the start of the winter quarter.
As interim vice chancellor, Gong is responsible for initiating, developing, and maintaining programs, services and facilities that support students in their academic pursuits. Student Affairs oversees enrollment management and academic support services, student housing, physical and mental health and wellness programs, intercollegiate athletics, student life and campus community, campus unions, recreation and campus bookstores.
Gong joined UC Davis in 1997 as assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs and was promoted to associate vice chancellor in 2004. Prior to her arrival on campus, she served in positions of increasing responsibility in student affairs at UCLA from 1972-1997. Gong has a doctorate in education from UCLA, a master's in recreational administration from California State University, Los Angeles, and a bachelor's degree in history from UC Davis.
