The Future of the Delta: Beyond the Peripheral Canal

April 24, Tuesday -- Future options for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and their implications for the environment and water supplies will be the topic of a panel discussion beginning at noon in room MU II of the Memorial Union on the UC Davis campus. The panel will include Jay Lund, professor of civil and environmental engineering; Peter Moyle, professor of wildlife, fisheries and conservation biology; and other authors of a major report sponsored by the Public Policy Institute of California, "Envisioning Futures for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta," released earlier this year. Millions of Californians rely on the Delta for drinking or irrigation water, as well as for energy and transportation. But the Delta is unstable and deteriorating, threatened by climate change, rising sea levels and sinking land, as well as earthquakes and human needs such as spreading urbanization. Since the report was released, the authors have consulted with state lawmakers on pending legislation and worked to explain long-term Delta scenarios, their implications and costs. The event is sponsored by the John Muir Institute of the Environment.
