Faculty, students and administrators mingle May 18 during a reception held at the chancellor's residence honoring those involved in presenting freshman seminars. Spring 2005 seminars have included more than 75 wide-ranging courses, involving more than 80 instructors. Topics include: "The Book of Job," "Decision Making," "The Science of Baseball," "Weddings and Marriage in America," "Humphrey Bogart: The Greatest Actor of All Time?" and "The Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debate." The seminars are designed to put a more personal touch on the learning process for students who are at the university for the first time. Faculty stipends of $1,500 to $2,000 are offered for teaching the one- and two-unit seminars.
