FOOD, ETC.: Farmers market, wine tasting return

FUSION FRESH CAFÉ

Food truck, outdoor seating and free wireless coming to the Mondavi Center. See separate story.

The UC Davis Farmers Market opens its fall season next week — hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday on the Silo Patio, the market’s new home as of last spring.

The location has it all: fresh fruits and vegetables at the market, and more food options in the Silo and the Gunrock Pub (which also sets up a booth for the market). In addition, the Shal’s Hilal and Star Ginger food trucks come to the patio every day.

New to the market this fall: pastries and iced coffee from the ASUCD Coffee House. See all the vendors.

The organizers said the campus radio station, KDVS, will bring in local musicians and DJs, and the Davis Food Co-op will provide face painters.

And don’t forget: The UC Davis Farmers Market is a zero-waste event, so be sure to bring reusable bags, and put organic waste in the compost bins.

First Wednesday Wine Flight

The First Wednesday Wine Flight returns on — what else? — the first Wednesday of the new academic year: Oct. 3.

The monthly wine tastings take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Gunrock Pub on the south side of the Silo, and are sponsored by the pub and University Dining Services. The cost is $10, and no reservations are required.

Next week’s tasting features Dreaming Tree Wines, a collaboration between winemaker Steve Reeder, an alumnus, and Dave Matthews of the Dave Matthews Band.

Other dates and themes this quarter:

  • Nov. 7: Red, White and New — The theme goes with election time, but forget about political polarization. Think polarizing wines that may persuade you into loving a new varietal.
  • Dec. 5: Oakville Station Tasting — With Mike Anderson, manager of the university’s Oakville Experimental Vineyard in the Napa Valley, talking about the vineyard and the research conducted there — and offering a taste of some of the vineyard’s wines.

To reserve a table, purchase tickets in advance, or schedule a private tasting event, call the Gunrock Pub, (530) 752-6262.
