Although recently retired after more than 35 years in food science and technology, Clara Robison is still active on campus and in the Davis community. The former administrative assistant donates two afternoons a week to help out in her former unit and gives a significant amount of time to Davis Community Meals, Grace in Action, the Yolo County Food Bank and other organizations. Through her volunteer efforts, she has turned her love of cooking into an outlet to help others. This year, a citizenship award within her former department was instituted. The "Clara" award now honors the department member who exemplifies the enthusiasm and selflessness for which Robison has been known.
How did you get involved?
It started with the International House years ago. A student from the Philippines there was very active and started international dinners, and I started helping her. Every month we featured a different country and its food. Then through the church I got involved with Davis Community Meals, and three years ago they asked me to be the head cook.
Why do you volunteer?
My week's not complete when I'm not doing something like Community Meals. There's just a void inside when I'm not doing something for others.
What has been a highlight of your service?
It's exciting to meet people from different countries and learn about their customs. I enjoy those interactions. •
