FLESHING OUT THE FACTS ...

Assistant professor of American Studies Nicole Fleetwood, right, talks about the behavior of women in the cultural spotlight at Fleetwood's talk "Excess Flesh: Black Women Performing (Hyper) Visibility." The talk, part of a Black History Month lecture series, drew upon Fleetwood's studies of black female pop cultural figures who use explicit body performances in their practices -- looking at celebrities like Janet Jackson, for instance, and what she was trying to accomplish by exposing a breast during the Super Bowl, and how the public responds. The series concludes today at 12:10 in 2215 Hart Hall. Law professor Angela Onwuachi-Willig (shown talking to Fleetwood in the photo on this page) will address: "Just Another Brother On The Supreme Court: What Justice Clarence Thomas Teaches Us About Racism and Racial Identity." African American and African studies also will co-sponsor a talk Tuesday by assistant professor of history Lisa Materson. She will address how migration and church attendance helped African American women keep alive discussion about women's rights and equality after the Civil War from noon to 1 p.m. in the Garrison Room of the MU. Fleetwood is shown speaking with associate professor and director of the African American and African studies program Moradewun Adejunmobi on the March 5, 2004, Dateline homepage.
