A large UC Davis team recently taught global warming to nearly every junior high science class in Davis. The project was organized by soil microbiologist Kate Scow, professor in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources. Participants included more than 70 faculty and staff members, postdoctorate researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students from a wide range of disciplines. The presentations were a final outreach effort of the Kearney Foundation of Soil Science's five-year focus on soil carbon. On May 14, Scow discussed climate change with Holmes Junior High students Esther Koo, left, and Sonya Gao. After the presentations, students joined the team to estimate which of the schools had most reduced its "carbon footprint."
