Calling for transparency, fidelity, fairness, merit fairness and merit

The Academic Senate's Compensation Principles:

  • Transparency — "The university's internal and external constituents should know what the abiding compensation policies and practices are," and those practices "should closely correspond" with the policies.
  • Fidelity to shared governance — This principle notes that the regents and senate have "important, complementary roles" in the review, consultation and approval processes, "and those roles should be respected."
  • Fairness within the context of the entire UC community — Personnel policies and practices should "inspire faith in the institution and confidence that the entire community is being treated justly."
  • Merit — Beyond cost-of-living and "Comparison Eight" adjustments, "compensation for all employee groups should be based on performance, as assessed in fair, valid and transparent ways." "Comparison Eight" refers to adjustments based on compensation at universities across the nation. The universities are Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford and Yale, all private, and Illinois, Michigan, New York-Buffalo and Virginia, all public.
