IN BRIEF: Student arrested for ramming police; fire chars 60 acres

Student arrested after ramming campus police vehicle

A first-year student was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and motor vehicle theft last Friday after failing to yield to UC Davis police officers.

Vladislav Timoshchik, an 18-year-old freshman, was booked at the Yolo County Jail on two felony counts after his arrest at 5 p.m.

While on routine patrol, UC Davis police officers saw a 2001 grey GMC Yukon parked in lot 22 near Regan Hall that had been reported stolen a week earlier. After a brief surveillance, the officers saw a white male get into the car and attempt to drive out of the parking lot.

The officers drove beside the Yukon, activated their emergency lights and positioned their patrol vehicle to block the Yukon's exit. Timoshchik then accelerated toward the patrol vehicle subsequently ramming the patrol unit. The officers were able to exit their car and make the arrest. The case is under investigation.

West campus grass fire draws three-alarm response

A grass fire broke out on the north side of the UC Davis Landfill located on County Road 98, west of the main campus, shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday.

Strong north winds, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour, quickly spread the fire south along the west side of the landfill to Putah Creek, near the fish hatchery. An unused shed burned but the hatchery was not harmed.

The fire, which burned more than 60 acres, was contained around 5 p.m. There were no injuries reported. A helicopter was called in to provide an aerial assessment of the scene.

An investigation is under way. The three-alarm fire drew 15 fire units from UC Davis, city of Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento, Winters, Dixon, West Plainfield, Willow Oaks, the Sutter Basin and others.
