IN BRIEF: Research reaches public via TV, open house; Smiley honored, more...

UC Davis research airs

A 60-minute documentary about the Cosumnes River -- a collaboration between UC Davis researchers and public television station KVIE -- airs next week.

"Cosumnes: A River's Song" documents research findings of UC Davis geology professor Jeff Mount. The program follows Mount and his team as they explore and study the Cosumnes, seeking a better understanding of how rivers can better serve communities and can best be preserved. Air times are 8-9 p.m. July 17 and 2-3 p.m. July 18 on KVIE, Channel 6.

Employment board rules on UPTE petition

Last week, the Public Employment Relations Board notified UC that a union petition submitted by UPTE seeking an election for the right to exclusively represent employees in a range of titles -- including analysts, student affairs officers, buyers and editors -- did not demonstrate a sufficient showing of support.

By law, UPTE (UC's University Professional and Technical Employees union) has until July 14 to try to obtain the necessary number of signatures and submit another petition.

At UC Davis, a total of about 1,100 administrative and professional staff -- 860 on campus and 260 at the medical center -- would be included in the new bargaining unit.

Lab invites visitors

The latest research in marine science will be exhibited at Bodega Marine Laboratory's "Meet the Scientists" open house 1-5 p.m. Saturday, July 19. The public is invited to visit research labs, talk with scientists and enjoy hands-on demonstrations at the UC Davis marine research facility. Displays include a tidepool exhibit, which offers visitors a chance to get up close and personal with intertidal animals, and an aquaria display of underwater habitats.

Some 10,000 guests visit the laboratory each year. The laboratory is located at 2099 Westside Road in Bodega Bay. Admission is free. See http://www.bml.ucdavis.edu/events/op-enhouse.html or call (707) 875-2211.

Smiley endowment set

Graduate School of Management faculty and staff members, along with area business leaders, recently rallied together to donate more than $40,000 to establish the Robert H. Smiley Endowment and a leadership award.

Staff and faculty members spearheaded the effort to honor Smiley, who on July 1 stepped down after 14 years as dean of the school to return to the faculty. The endowment will fund in perpetuity the presentation of the Robert H. Smiley Leadership Award at commencement each year. Plaques and $750 cash awards are given to both a full-time and a working professional MBA graduate.
