Regents study student fee levels at March meeting

The UC regents reviewed a variety of student fee proposals, aimed at reducing a proposed 40 percent fee increase for academic graduate students, at their March 17 meeting in San Francisco. No action was taken.

The regents are expected to vote on student fee levels for the 2004-05 year later this spring, potentially at their May meeting, though the exact timing will depend upon the progress of state budget negotiations.

In his state budget proposal, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested UC fee increases of 10 percent ($498) for resident undergraduates and 40 percent ($2,088) for resident graduate academic students. Nonresident tuition also would increase 20 percent. Most professional school fees also would increase substantially; the proposal did not specify fee levels for these schools but proposed that state support for the schools be reduced by an average of 25 percent.

April 6 campus memorial set for beloved Professor Emeritus Dale Lott

A celebration of the life of Professor Emeritus Dale Lott will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in the Recreation Pool Lodge.

Lott, age 70, died on Jan. 26 from longstanding pulmonary fibrosis that only recently had been diagnosed.

He was the founding chair of the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conserva-tion Biology and maintained many close friendships on campus.

A full obituary with more information about Lott's contributions to campus, both on a personal and professional level is available online at the Feb. 6, 2004, Dateline site at http://www-dateline.ucdavis.edu.

CAAA names alumni regent

The UC Davis Cal Aggie Alumni Association has named a former U.S. deputy secretary of agriculture to the UC Board of Regents. Richard Rominger, a 1949 Davis graduate, will serve two years as UC Davis' alumni representative.

A CAAA life member, Rominger has served on both the CAAA board of directors and the UC Davis Foundation. He also often serves as an adviser and a liaison between UC and the agricultural community. Rominger and his wife, Evelyne, own a farm in Winters.

He cites reconciling budget constraints with the increasing numbers of eligible students as the key issue facing the regents.

Appointments of alumni regents rotate among UC's 10 campuses. Beginning July 1, Rominger will serve as a non-voting "regent designate" for one year, followed by one year as a voting member.

New physiology name OK'd

The Department of Human Physiology has changed its name to the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology.

The change, OK'd by the campus in winter quarter, was pursued to more accurately reflect research of the department, founded in 1966. The name Human Physiology was originally selected to distinguish the department from Animal Physiology and Vet Med Physiology, which now no longer exist as such. Also, the new name reflects the recent addition of the membrane biology initiative in the department.

Located on the fourth floor of Tupper Hall, the department has 10 FTE faculty, two non-FTE faculty and three administrative staff members, plus some 40 lab staff members, postdocs and students.

Children's rights event set

Children's rights and other legal efforts to keep the young safe in an increasingly dangerous world will be examined during a daylong symposium at UC Davis Saturday, April 10.

The "2004 Symposium on Children's Rights," presented by the UC Davis Journal of Juvenile Law and Policy, is free and open to the public. Sessions will explore current topics in welfare and dependency law, the impact of medical research on children, and trends in child advocacy. There will also be a screening of "Love and Diane," an award-winning documentary of poverty, welfare and drug rehabilitation that follows a family through three generations.

The symposium, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will be held in the Moot Court Room of King Hall. For details and to register, visit http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/jjlp/symposium.html.
