Career Management Academy
Staff Development and Professional Services is once again offering its Career Management Academy, described as an opportunity to explore the career assessment process.
The one-day program is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 28. This is the second time the academy is being offered in 2010-11; the final session is set for Friday, May 20. The instructors, Constance Stevens and Andrea Weiss, are nationally certified career counselors.
“It’s natural to want a career that brings a high level of satisfaction, enrichment and opportunity for professional development,” organizers said. “The Career Management Academy offers comprehensive career assessment that facilitates self-knowledge, job satisfaction and the development of professional goals.”
Organizers said participants will inventory their work values, personality, interests and skills — all of which are integral steps in developing career goals.
“Participants will emerge with a renewed sense of direction, more confident and prepared to make informed work-life choices.”
Organizers said the course will use these assessment tools: Career Values Card Sort, SkillScan, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory.
The academy runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Hamilton Room at the Heitman Staff Learning Center (between Bainer Hall and South Silo).

Blood drive Jan. 19-20
The ASUCD's first blood and marrow drive of 2011 is set for next week, Wednesday-Thursday, Jan. 19-20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days in Freeborn Hall.
Organizers said every participant will receive coupons for a free pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream and a 25 percent discount at the Gap store in the Davis Commons shopping center, and will be entered in a drawing to win an iPod.
BloodSource, the Sacramento-based blood bank that conducts the ASUCD blood draws, advises prospective donors are advised to eat and to drink plenty of fluids before coming in, and to please bring photo identification.

Copy cards need re-encoding
Repro Graphics has reprogrammed its campus copy machines to accommodate students’ new AggieCards — and, as a result, the machines will no longer accept other copy cards unless they are re-encoded.
You can do this yourself by using the encoding devices at these copy locations:
- 176 Hoagland Hall (8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday)
- Shields Library
- Carlson Health Sciences Library
- Blaisdell Medical Library, Sacramento campus
At each library, the encoding devices are at or near the circulation desks.
The process requires you to run your card through the device twice. The first time, it reads your card on the old track on the magnetic strip. The second time. Is you’re your code on the new track.
Brian Wadell, director of Repro Graphics, said he will be happy to send a representative to departments and units with multiple cards — and the rep will re-encode all the cards. Or, departments can send all their cards to Repro Graphics for re-encoding.
“If you’ve already had the re-encoding done and your card still doesn’t work, you need to contact us,” Wadell said. Call (530) 754-2127 or send an e-mail to copierhelp@ucdavis.edu.
Staff adviser to the regents
The UC Office of the President announced that it will accept applications from Jan. 18 to March 4 for staff adviser to the regents. The staff member who is selected will serve a two-year term, from July 2011 to June 2013, the first year as staff adviser-designate and the next year as staff adviser.
The staff adviser program, now in its fifth year, allows for two staff and-or non-Academic Senate academic employees to participate in open sessions of designated committees of the Board of Regents.
Juliann Martinez, director of Gift Management at UC Berkeley, holds the job of staff adviser through June, at which time she will be succeeded by Penelope “Penny” Herbert, manager in the Department of Clinical Operations at the UC Davis Health System, who began as staff adviser-designate in July 2010.
Questions about the staff adviser position or the application process should be directed to Jeannene Whalen, UCOP Employee Relations, (510) 987-0853 or Jeannene.Whalen@ucop.edu.
More information, including the application form when it becomes available Jan. 18.
