Business Officer Institute

The next session of the Business Officer Institute is scheduled for May 21-24 in Newport Beach. Registration began on March 5. To nominate an individual manager for participation, e-mail the following information to Chuck Yannacone at cgyannacone@ucdavis.edu:

  • participant's name, title, title code, department, e-mail address, telephone number, whether nominee is from an academic or administrative unit;
  • nominator's name, title, e-mail address and telephone number;
  • supervisor's name, title, e-mail address and telephone number;
  • rationale for the nomination;

Daylight savings, computers

With daylight-saving time arriving this weekend (March 11), Information and Educational Technology offers a Web site with advice and information on what this year's early time change might mean for computers, applications and other electronic devices on campus. Visit vpiet.ucdavis.edu/dst to find:

  • information about the new DST rules;
  • a table that identifies the patches and updates available for various operating systems, platforms, applications, mobile devices;
  • links to vendor DST patches and updates, and more;

Faculty, staff volunteers needed on parade route

The Picnic Day Parade team is looking for faculty and staff volunteers to help along the April 14 parade route. Volunteers will assist by keeping an eye on parade entries that may experience technical difficulties, making sure spectators remain on sidewalks when watching, and by helping to keep the parade moving along efficiently.

Employees are poets, too

Ron Lane, safety coordinator, greenhouse manager and all-around handyman in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, recently published a book of poetry: Poems, Ballads and Rhymes from a Strange, Beautiful and Quirky Mind, available at the UC Davis Bookstore.

Terry Moore, who works in the UC Davis Genetics Laboratory, announced a CD and book release party from 7 to 9 p.m. March 17 as part of the Underground Poetry Series at Underground Books, 2814 35th St., Sacramento. Transformative fitness

Loosen up your limbs March 22 with a Health Awareness session, Introduction to Nia: A Transformative Fitness Program. Nia is a worldwide fusion fitness movement founded on the principle, "the joy of movement." The one-hour session starts at noon in the Cabernet Room in the North Silo. The instructor is Kelly Anne Fitzgerald.

Profs: memorial services

A campus memorial for professor emeritus Shang Fa Yang will be held at 4 p.m. March 22 at the International House, 10 College Park Drive, Davis. An internationally acclaimed plant scientist, Yang was a former chair of the vegetable crops department, an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and an authority on the plant hormone ethylene. He died Feb. 12 at age 74 from complications of pneumonia.

A memorial service for Calvin Schwabe, a professor emeritus of epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. March 26 at the University Club. Schwabe was considered the founder of veterinary epidemiology and was a global authority on animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans. He died June 24 at 79 from complications of post-polio syndrome.

Vintage wine tasting

The Department of Viticulture and Enology will host a special tasting of 24 vintage 1980 California Cabernet Sauvignon wines from 5 to 7 p.m. March 22 in MUII in the Memorial Union. The wines from 24 different producers, have been stored under identical conditions for more than 20 years.

Poetry, laughs, stories

John Boe, a University Writing Program lecturer, writer, storyteller and scholar, will deliver a performance from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. March 13 at Bistro 33, 226 E St. in Davis. The event will take place in the Events Room. Call (530) 756-4556 for more information.
