OFF THE BEATEN PATH: The University Haircutters...

Barber John Salido, puts the finishing snips on a 30-year customer, Emanuel Epstein, emeritus professor of Land, Air and Water Resources, at the University Haircutters barber shop. Tucked away in the Freeborn Hall basement, the two-chair campus shop has been available to students, staff and faculty for more than 60 years and comes complete with a putting green to help pass the time. Salido has been a familiar face to generations of students, running the business since 1970. When he first began, a haircut ran $1.75. The price is not the only thing that has changed over the years. The shop was originally located in North Hall and directed by ASUCD. It even contained a beauty parlor for 10 years. These days the facility is overseen by MU services and only provides haircuts. Although University Haircutters hasn't moved since 1961, Salido says many people still don't know about it. "We're one of the best-kept secrets on campus." -- Mike Sintetos
