Don Reich, an acclaimed California artist, was honored at an Oct. 21 reception in the Plant and Environmental Sciences Building’s second-floor foyer. His new painting, “Delta,” was unveiled and will be displayed in the building. The work is a large impressionistic vision, in blues and greens, of delta wetlands extending to the far distance. Reich was born in Martinez to parents who were dust-bowl refugees. As a tow-headed boy, he wandered the delta area. He began painting seriously in high school and is celebrating his 60th year as an artist. “I am a native like all others born here before me—no matter what country,” he says when asked why he chose that scene to paint. “Mount Diablo was always my compass mark, Contra Costa my county. Its delta is no stranger to those who have boats and time.”
