THE ARBORETUM: Make and play a Native Californian elderberry flute

Antonio Flores, an East Bay Regional Parks docent, returns to the arboretum next weekend to lead another of his workshops on the Native California tradition of making flutes from elderberry.

Flores teaches how to make and play the flutes, and also talks about the culture of flute making. He also will talk about the endangered elderberry beetle.

All materials will be supplied; please bring sharpened pocketknives. All ages are invited; adults must supervise their young children. 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 146 Environmental Horticulture.

Folk Music Jam Session — Pull out your fiddles, guitars, mandolins, penny whistles, pipes, flutes, squeezeboxes — you name it! — and join your fellow musicians during the lunch hour for a little bluegrass, old-time, blues, Celtic, klezmer and other world music. All skill levels welcome. Listeners, too! Noon-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, Wyatt Deck.  

Early Spring in the Terrace Garden — Look for signs of spring and take home ideas of plants for your own containers and beds. 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, Arboretum Terrace Garden, next to Whole Foods market in the Davis Commons shopping center, First Street and Richards Boulevard.

SPRING PLANT SALES

The arboretum announced its schedule of spring plant sales: three on Saturday and one on Sunday, each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Arboretum Teaching Nursery.

The season begins with the Member Sale, Saturday, March 9. Not a member? No worries — you can join at the gate!

The other three sales are open to the public:

  • Sunday, April 28
  • Saturday, May 18
