Campus employees have been working hard to process some of the more than 39,000 total applications received this year from students wanting to attend UC Davis in the fall 2004. After the applications are sorted and screened for data correctness, they are forwarded to the about 100 professional readers in undergraduate admissions and academic and student service units on campus. Since December, trained, professional readers on campus have been offering a comprehensive review of each freshman application — assessing academic and personal accomplishments in the context in which they were achieved. UC Davis plans to notify all applicants in mid-March about whether or not they were accepted. UC Davis last year extended offers of admission to about 57 percent of the freshman who applied, compared to 24 percent at UCLA and UC Berkeley. Given proposed budget cuts, the UC system may need to cut admission offers by 10 percent. Historically, about 26 percent of the students who are offered admission to UC Davis actually enroll.
