MARCH 3: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES DEAN CANDIDATES TO VISIT
From the office of Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter

After reviewing the recommendations of the recruitment advisory committee for the position of dean of the College of Biological Sciences, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter has invited five outstanding candidates to visit UC Davis and meet with campus constituents.

The visits will be from March 15 through 31, and the schedule for each day's visit will include an open forum from 3 to 4:30 p.m., during which the campus community is invited to meet the candidates. The forum locations will be announced later.

Each candidate’s name and curriculum vitae will be posted online approximately 48 hours in advance of the candidate’s visit. More information is available on the chancellor's website (click on "Executive Recruitments" under Quick Links, then "Dean, College of Biological Sciences").

Here are the dates of each visit:

  • Candidate 1 — Tuesday, March 15
  • Candidate 2 — Thursday, March 17
  • Candidate 3 — Friday, March 18
  • Candidate 4 — Monday, March 28
  • Candidate 5 — Thursday, March 31

MARCH 3: ORDERS DUE FOR SPRING COMMENCEMENT REGALIA
From Material Management and the UC Davis Bookstore

The campus’s Materiel Management unit and the bookstore are taking orders for caps, gowns, tassels and hoods for spring commencement.

The Materiel Management unit provides caps, gowns, tassels and UC doctoral hoods at no charge, with individual departments usually doing the ordering for their faculty members.

Loaner regalia can be picked up at the Central Storehouse, or, for a nominal charge, departments can arrange for delivery.

Orders can be placed online. More information is available from Terry Chase, (530) 752-9184. He is also the person to call if you would like a paper order form, or if you would like to arrange for delivery.

Orders are due at the Central Storehouse by May 6.

The bookstore handles rentals of non-UC hoods, and UC hoods for all degrees other than doctorates. The rental fee is $20 for orders placed by April 15, with $10 added on for rush orders after that date. Faculty are advised to order through their departments; the online order form is here.

FEB. 18: ADMAN'S MID-MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE
From the Administrative Management Group

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi has been added to the program for the AdMan’s Mid-Management Conference. The organizers said the chancellor will open the meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, March 9. The theme is "From Survival to Success: Change = Opportunity.”

The registration fee is $90 through Tuesday, Feb. 22, or $115 after that, through the close of registration Monday, Feb. 28, payable only by department recharge. The fees include a buffet breakfast, morning and afternoon breaks, and a sit-down lunch.

The Administrative Management Group presents the conference annually to address current topics of interest to campus managers, find ways to improve and simplify business operations at all levels, promote professional growth of all department and unit administrators and managers, and encourage work-life enrichment through training and understanding.

The conference runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the ballroom at the Activities and Recreation Center.

Organizers said Kathleen Passanisi, motivational speaker and humorist, will be the guest presenter for the second consecutive year, by popular demand, and will be accompanied by Annie Passanisi, her daughter, as co-presenter.

FEB. 15: REMINDER ON TRAVEL INSURANCE REGISTRATION
From Alan B. Huynh, business operations coordinator, Administrative Services and University Development Administration

In light of the recent evacuation of UC students, staff and faculty from Egypt, UCOP strongly reminds UC travelers (see note below) that registration for travel insurance is required for all business trips that involve travel outside the state of California.

NOTE: "Travelers" includes employees of the university; students, interns, residents and fellows associated with the university in connection with emergency medical programs; any other persons designated by the university while traveling at the express direction and with the approval of the university; and traveling companions.

The UC Traveler Insurance Coverage Web page states the following:

The Office of Risk Services within the Financial Management Department at the UC Office of the President has arranged for UC travelers on official university business to be covered for a wide variety of accidents and incidents while away from the campus or primary workplace. Upon completion of the short "Traveler Insurance" form, UC travelers will be provided with information to use in an emergency while traveling on UC business both domestically and abroad. Registration is required for business trips out of state and to foreign countries.

The goal of this insurance is to provide protection to regents, faculty, staff or any person designated by UC while traveling at the direction and approval of UC. Coverage can also be provided to a spouse-domestic partner and dependent(s) when traveling with them.

This broad coverage includes medical care and evacuation, loss of personal property (UC employees only), extraction for political and weather related reasons, and more, at no cost to UC travelers-employees.

Here’s how it works:

You are automatically registered with “Business Travel Accident Insurance” if:

  • You booked and purchased your travel using “BCD Travel” via the Connexxus portal, or
  • You booked and purchased your travel using “UC Travel Center” via the Connexxus portal.

You must manually register your trip for “Business Travel Accident Insurance," using the online form, if:

  • You booked and purchased your travel using “SWAZBIZ (Southwest Airlines)” via the Connexxus portal, or
  • You did not use the Connexxus portal and worked directly with 3rd-party agencies.

NOTE: "Business Travel Accident Insurance" is specific to each trip, so every time you travel outside the state of California, that individual trip has to be registered. This registration either happens automatically if you use BCD Travel or the UC Travel Center, or when you do it manually via the online form.

Once the online insurance registration is complete, each traveler will receive an email confirmation through iJET.

FEB. 9: GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDENT SYMPOSIUM
From
the Chancellor's Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board

Members of the Chancellor's Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board ask that you encourage your exceptional graduate and professional students to apply to the Interdisciplinary Graduate and Professional Student Symposium (April 21-23).

This year the Graduate Student Association and the Chancellor's Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board have worked hard to plan an event that promises to be both prestigious and stimulating. More than $10,000 will be given away to graduate and professional students who can best convey the importance of their research or work at UC Davis.

This is a great opportunity for UC Davis to reward graduate and professional student contributions to our campus.

Application deadline extended: Applications are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23.
