Saleh Tyebjee ’08 is in Melbourne to compete in the world championships of Australian rules football, starting this weekend, while a second Aggie alum, Seth Weil ’11, is headed to Amsterdam for the world championships in rowing later this month.

Tyebjee, president of the Sacramento Australian Football League, is a two-time member of the U.S. team in the Australian Football League International Cup. The first time was 2011, and now he’s back for IC14 (the International Cup is held every three years).

IC14 opens Saturday (Aug. 9) and continues until the grand finals (men’s and women’s) on Aug. 23.

The U.S. team, USA Revolution, is scheduled to play its first game on Sunday (Aug. 10), against Finland. USA Revolution’s other first-round games: Canada (Aug. 13) and New Zealand (Aug. 16).

Officially, it's not "Australian rules football," but simply Australian football. Learn more about the game.

Weil rowed to a bronze medal in last year’s world championships in South Korea, as part of a four-man crew. He’s still in a four-man crew, this time in the “stroke” position (at the stern), meaning the other three rowers follow his lead.

The 2014 rowing championships are being held this year in Amsterdam, Aug. 24-31. The first heats in the men’s four competition are scheduled for Aug. 24.
