‘No colorful cards,’ please

This is the 2005-06 schedule card for this season's Aggie men's varsity basketball team. But do not even think about sending one to a prospective student-athlete. That would be a violation of NCAA rules.

Under Division I rule 13.4.1.1, a university can send only a recruiting brochure or media guide, business cards, camp brochures, nonathletics information about UC Davis, educational material from the NCAA, and "general correspondence, including letters and postcards issued by the U.S. Postal Service (i.e., blank cards) and institutional note cards."

Anything that accompanies such material must be printed on "plain white paper with black ink." In other words, no colorful schedule cards.

Well, how about printing and mailing a copy of the color schedule from the Aggie athletics Web site? That is not allowed, either. Rule 13.4.1.3 states that recruiting materials other than those specifically mentioned in Rule 13.4.1.1 cannot be mailed or given to prospective student-athletes if such material is printed from a Web site.

So, how can the university advise a potential recruit about a team schedule? Type it out and send it by e-mail or regular mail. Or, the prospective student-athlete can find it for himself or herself by going to the UC Davis Web site.

Or, the university can e-mail the link to the prospective student-athlete.
