Landscape Architecture
College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
- Bachelor of Science
Are you interested in planning communities and outdoor spaces that are more walkable, livable, meaningful and sustainable? The landscape architecture major prepares students with the skills and technical expertise necessary for professional careers. They can balance the complex relationships between human cultures, the built environment and natural systems. Landscape architects increase the quality of life through the development and preservation of landscape design and planning processes that are meaningful, relevant and sustainable. The program is fully accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects. The major will teach you to design outdoor spaces, grasp the big picture, think in three dimensions and visualize potential.
Major Requirements
You will begin with fundamental courses in biology, social sciences, arts and humanities, environmental horticulture and basic landscape architectural concepts. These courses will prepare you to think critically about the role of space and the designed environment in serving specific social needs. As an upper-division student, you will learn applications of technology to designing and creating outdoor spaces, analyze historical and contemporary theories of landscapes and gardens, and gain extensive hands-on experience with plants and other elements of the landscape in outdoor "laboratory" classes.
