Math is everywhere, so the major offers broad career choices. Any complex system can be analyzed using mathematics. Math arises in health care, business, marketing and even entertainment. Every time you enter your credit card information online, mathematics encrypts the information, protecting it during transmission. Every time you stream a video, mathematics is behind the scenes, compressing and transmitting data quickly. Imagine what an impact you could have on future advancements by studying math!
Major Requirements
Freshmen: You will begin your study with basic preparatory mathematics courses such as calculus (if not completed in high school), linear algebra, as well as computer science and engineering and physical sciences, economics or statistics courses.
Transfer Students: The UC Transfer Pathway for this major strongly recommends that all lower-division requirements (equivalent to the first two years of courses) be completed prior to transferring.
At the upper division level, you will plan your coursework with the help of a faculty adviser. The applied mathematics major also requires courses outside of the department in the scientific area of your choice.
