Men’s water polo shines nationally
The UC Davis men’s water polo team prides itself in playing the game the right way, emphasizing the fundamentals so student-athletes succeed in competition and later in life.
Ranked 12th in the nation, UC Davis (5-4 overall, 5-1 league) will host the three-day, nine-team Aggie Shootout held at Schaal Aquatics Center during Sept. 21-23. The Aggies open the tournament against California Baptist University at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Last weekend, UC Davis finished 12th in the NorCal Invitational men’s water polo tournament at Stanford University.
Whether water polo or another sport, the UC Davis intercollegiate sports experience is a rich one for spectators and participants alike. There are 23 varsity teams playing at venues such as Aggie Stadium, The Pavilion and the Schaal Aquatics Center. Four years after a successful transition to Division I, student-athletes continue to perform at a high level academically even as the level of athletic competition has risen.
In July, the university appointed Terrance J. “Terry” Tumey as its new director of athletics. Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi described Tumey as the “perfect person to take UC Davis athletics forward.”
