Students: Head downtown for fun

Student-friendly downtown Davis is one of UC Davis’ great advantages. Located next to the campus, the business district is the heart of our university town of 66,000.

Students can walk or ride their bikes through the 32-block area to find what they need. The food is great, the bike shops plenty and there is so much to do. In fact, the downtown — known for its safety and entertainment — has more than 70 restaurants and cafes, 13 movie screens and three art galleries.

One highlight is the Davis Farmers Market at Central Park, open every Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon. In addition, the market hosts Picnic in the Park, a Wednesday night celebration from March through October. Besides its mainstay of fresh local food, the market hosts music, arts and crafts, as well as opportunities to become involved in community events and issues.

Other popular events include the 2nd Friday ArtAbout, a monthly evening of art viewing and receptions at galleries and businesses, and a number of trivia nights at downtown restaurants. Live music is easy to find on weekends, and Davis often picks up acts before or after they play in the Bay Area.
