UC Davis Today: Kudos to our 2013 graduates!

  • Oh, yeah! We celebrate our first students to graduate with the Aggie Traditions medal for living 49 UC Davis traditions — and creating their own.

  • Meet, from left, Angelica Thornton, political science; Philip Yip, anthropology and geology; Mandy Hanou, human development; and Artem Trotsyuk, biological sciences.

  • The student alumni association and student government identified the quintessential UC Davis experiences — from riding a Unitrans bus to fun at Picnic Day — and students record their participation.

  • And there's an app for that.

  • In our traditions, food is big … from olive oil and the Meat Lab to the Coffee House and dining halls. So is having a campus job — Thornton works at Segundo.

  • Close to Hanou's heart is No. 3, visiting the dairy cows. "To me, this is the tradition that is most unique to UC Davis," she said. "Few other schools have cows on campus.”

  • Thornton keeps up with news on the campus and beyond. Since 1915, the community has been reading "The California Aggie," No. 6.

  • Even hail didn't keep Yip from cheering on Aggie football, No. 9. Truly a good sport, Yip checked intramural sports off his list as a soccer referee.

  • Trotsyuk, a student assistant to the chancellor, incorporated bowling, No. 10, into events he got rolling to help campus leaders and students enjoy some exercise together.

  • He counts Stride for Aggie Pride as his No. 50. The 5K he organized drew 1,800 participants and raised $17,000 for scholarships.

  • Here, Trotsyuk is at the race with Adela de la Torre, interim vice chancellor for Student Affairs, left, and Carly Sandstrom, ASUCD president.

  • Thornton plans to show off her own No. 50 by decorating her cap for commencement.

Various graduation speakers are scheduled to inspire the thousands of students who have achieved their academic milestones.

More information about speakers and a list of graduation dates and times are available on the commencement website. Each of the commencements will also be available as live and on-demand webcasts. Be sure to share the link with your friends and family that can’t make it to graduation.

Also, don’t forget a gift for your favorite graduate at the UC Davis Stores, such as a commencement souvenir

After celebrating, graduates are urged to stay connected with friends and faculty here at UC Davis. The Cal Aggie Alumni Association can keep you up to date on campus news and events even after you graduate. Make the transition from student to alum, which gives you discount on exam prep, access to all UC libraries, nationwide traveling discounts and more.
