UC Davis Today: Picnic Day 2013: Welcome to our open house
Welcome to our open house
What better choices than alums Dick McCapes and his late wife, Marilyn Slater McCapes, to serve as the honorary marshals for this year’s Picnic Day parade.
Dick and Marilyn, who died in January 2012 — and the Slater family legacy — represent deep-rooted connections to our campus and the embodiment of this year’s theme: SNAPSHOT.
This year, as much as any other, Picnic Day will be a sort of snapshot of all that the campus and the surrounding community have to offer, and the McCapes and Slater families have given plenty in return to UC Davis and the broader community to help it all grow and flourish.
So, Picnic Day 2013 will be the place to be on April 20, whether you’re connecting with old friends, checking out the Frisbee dog contest or watching the chemistry magic show. The 99th installment of the campus’s open house includes many events, so it’s always good to have a plan. We suggest beginning with the pancake breakfast, then getting a good spot to watch the parade, and ending the day listening to the Battle of the Bands.
If the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra is more your style, then be sure to be at the Mondavi Center for a free concert at noon. All campus museums and art galleries will be open, too. Read more about the arts on Picnic Day and the many exhibitions.
Alumni can connect with each other, thanks to several programs planned by the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.
And everyone is invited to go home with a taste of UC Davis — olives, that is, in campus-branded olive oil, including the new Estate blend from campus trees.
Meanwhile, the campus is calling on all Picnic Day participants to help ensure that this year’s open house is safe and family friendly. “See something? Say something,” will be the watchwords of the day as visitors are urged to report any problems or concerns they might see. The number to call: 530-754-COPS.
If you have questions about parking, eating, the weather and other logistics, read the Picnic Day FAQ.
Most important, please come and have fun!
