UC Davis academic strength and dedication to high-quality writing is demonstrated by a top-ranked undergraduate University Writing Program, its vibrant graduate program for creative writing, a popular English department and writing workshops given through UC Davis Extension.

Campus authors

The UC Davis Bookstore regularly features public readings by campus authors from their newest publications. Learn about the events through The Bleat, a weekly e-mail newsletter with news on books by UC Davis authors, readings on campus, publishing and campus literary happenings. To join the e-mail list, send a note to the bookstore’s Paul Takushi at pmtakushi@ucdavis.edu with the word “subscribe” in the subject heading.

Davis Humanities Institute

This interdisciplinary research center sponsors a variety of public talks, conferences and presentations in the humanities and affiliated social sciences. UC Davis scholars and high-profile visiting speakers present their research and delve into wide-ranging topics in the arts and humanities and their relevance to society, culture and public policy.

Department of English

Throughout the academic year, faculty members, students and visiting writers offer readings and discussions sponsored by the English department.

UC Davis Extension courses

Beginning to advanced writers are encouraged to explore UC Davis Extension’s continuing education courses in nonfiction and creative writing. Certificate programs are also available for writers who want to pursue more in-depth coursework.

Poetry in Davis

Twice a month, you can enjoy readings from the best in local, regional and traveling poets in a program hosted by Andy Jones and produced by Brad Henderson, both instructors in the University Writing Program.

Prized Writing presentations

Hear our best student authors talk about their writing. The University Writing Program, which conducts the Prized Writing contest, hosts student presentations throughout the academic year.

The Tomales Bay Workshops

Sponsored by the UC Davis Creative Writing Program and UC Davis Extension, the annual Tomales Bay Workshops bring a dozen aspiring writers into close community with nationally-known poets and writers, and respected editors and agents.

Trivia nights

Trivia meister, poet and university lecturer “Dr. Andy” Jones spikes his Monday-night Bistro 33 Pub quiz with questions about his favorite subjects, literature and poetry. Several other trivia contests held throughout the city draw smart student and community participants who know their facts.
